Regulation for All Under Graduate Engineering Programmes

1. Admission Requirements

1.1 All the undergraduate programmes for Engineering (B.Tech.) are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The intake approved by the AICTE is followed got the admission.
1.2 Candidates have to fulfill the medical standards required for admission as set out by the Admission Committee.
1.3 The selected candidate shall be admitted to the postgraduate programme after the verification of the certificates and payment of the prescribed fees.
1.4 Candidates seeking admission to the first semester of the eight semester B.Tech. Degree Programme should have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations of (10+2) Curriculum (Academic Stream) with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry subjects. (OR) Should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination of Vocational stream (Vocational groups in Engineering / Technology).
1.5 The candidates who passed the Diploma in Engineering / Technology are eligible to apply for Lateral entry admission to the third semester of B.Tech. in the branch(Lateral entry) corresponding to the ranch of study. (OR) The candidates who passed the Degree in Science (B.Sc.,) (10+2+3 stream) with Mathematics as a subject at the B.Sc. Level are eligible to apply for Lateral entry admission to the third semester of B.Tech. Such candidates shall undergo two additional Engineering subject(s) in the third and fourth semesters as prescribed by the University.

2. Duration of the Programme

2.1 The minimum duration of all the undergraduate Engineering programmes is four years (those who joined in first year) OR three years (Lateral Entry Students)
2.2 The students who have not completed within minimum duration shall complete with in another three years (six semesters), if not the registration of the student shall be cancelled
2.3 Each semester shall normally consist of 90 working days or 450 periods of 50 / 45 minutes each. The Head of the Department shall ensure that every staff member imparts instruction as per the number of periods specified in the syllabus and that the staff member teaches the full Content of the specified syllabus of the subject.

3. Structure of the Programme

Each programme has different types of courses as follows:
3.1 Humanities and Social Sciences (HS) courses include Technical English, Engineering Ethics and Human Values, Communication skills, Environmental Science and Engineering.
3.2 Basic Sciences (BS) courses include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc. Engineering Sciences (ES) courses include Engineering practices, Engineering Graphics, Basics of Electrical / Electronics / Mechanical / Computer Engineering, Instrumentation etc.
3.3 Professional Core (PC) courses include the core courses relevant to the chosen specialization/branch.
3.4 Professional Elective (PE) courses include the elective courses relevant to the chosen Credit Assignment
3.5 Employability Enhancement Courses include Project Work and/or Internship, Seminar, Professional Practices, Case Study and Industrial/Practical Training
3.6 Credit Assignment
Each course is assigned certain number of credits based on the following:

4. Attendance Requirements

4.1Every student is expected to maintain minimum of 80% attendance to appear CAT as well as End Semester Examinations.
4.2 However, in order to give provision for certain unavoidable reasons such as Medical / participation in sports, the student is expected to attend atleast 70% of the classes.
4.3 However, a student who secures overall attendance between 60% to 70% in the current Semester due to medical reasons (prolonged hospitalization / accident / specific illness) /may be permitted to appear for the current semester examinations subject to the condition that the candidate shall submit the medical certificate attested by the Head of the Institution. The same shall be forwarded to the Controller of Examinations for record purposes. Students who secure less than 65% attendance shall not be permitted to write the Continuous Assessment Test (CAT).
4.4 Students who secure less than 60% overall attendance shall not be permitted to write the University examination at the end of the semester and not permitted to move to the next semester. The dropout students due to the attendance lag shall redo the semester by registering with prescribed admission fee and semester fee.

5. Internal Assessment

5.1 Two Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) shall be conducted in a semester and the marks scored in these tests shall be included in for calculation the Internal marks. The CAT duration shall be two hours and maximum marks shall be 60.
5.2 The internal Marks for theory subjects shall be calculated as follows
  Continuous Assessment Test Marks : 60% (Average of two CAT)
  Assignment/Seminar/ Report writing : 30%
  Attendance : 10 %
5.3 The internal Marks for Laboratory Courses/ Skill Enhancement Courses/Feld Visits shall be calculated as follows
   Performance of Experiments, Pre-laboratory and Record work : 50%
   Internal Test : 30%
   Viva-voce : 10%
   Attendance :10
5.4 The internal Marks for Dissertation/ Project work shall be calculated as per the Instruction given by the Head of the Department.

6. End Semester Examination

6.1 The End Semester Examinations shall be conducted in the month of November/December during odd semester and in the month of May/June during even semester. The End Semester Examination duration shall be three hours and maximum marks shall be 100.

7. Passing Requirements

7.1 Fifty percentage of internal mark and fifty percentage of external marks are added to obtain the final mark.
   Internal Assessment : 50 Marks
   End Semester Examination : 50 Marks (3 Hours Examination for 100 marks: the Mark will be converted to 50 Marks)
7.2 Minimum Pass Mark, both Internal Assessment and End Semester Examination put together is 45% with Minimum 50% in the End Semester Examination. Internal Marks are valid only for two attempts/appearance (regular & one arrear)
7.3 Internal Mark will not be considered for any arrear examination written / conducted after the completion of their course of study.

8. Award of Letter Grades

All assessments of a course will be evaluated on absolute marks basis. However, for the purpose of reporting the performance of a candidate, letter grades, each carrying certain number of points, will be awarded as per the range of total marks (out of 100) obtained by the candidate in each subject as detailed below:

9. Computation of SGPA and CGPA

9.1 The SGPA is the ratio of sum of the product of the number of credits with the grade points scored by a student in all the courses by a student and the sum of the number of credits of all the courses undergone by a student i.e.,
where Ci is the number of credits of the ith course and Gi is the grade point scored by the student to the i th course
9.2 The CGPA is also calculated in the same manner taking into account all the courses undergone by a student over all the semesters of a programme i.e.,
               
where Si is the SGPA of the ith course and Ci is the total number of credits in that semester
The SGPA and CGPA is rounded off to 2 decimal points and reported in the transcripts

   Thus, CGPA = (20 x 6.9 + 22 x 7.8 + 25 x 5.6 + 26 x 6.0 + 26 x 6.3 + 25 x 8.0) / 144 = 6.73
9.5 Conversion Of CGPA To Percentage
The CGPA obtained through the above process can be converted to percentage by multiplying it by 10.
For eg:- 6.73 * 10 = 67.3%

10. Classification of the Degree Awarded

10.1 First Class with Distinction: A student is awarded First Class with Distinction, if he/she has passed all the subjects in the first attempt with a CGPA of 8.0 or above.
10.2 First Class: A student is awarded First Class if he/she has passed all the subjects within the within the minimum duration of the course (four semesters) or minimum duration plus additional two semesters (8 semesters) with a CGPA of 6.5 or above. One year authorized Break of study (if availed) due to attendance lag/ medical reasons need not to be included in the above duration.
10.3 Second Class: All other students who qualify for the award of the degree shall be declared to have passed the examination in Second Class.

11. Revaluation

11.1 Students can apply for revaluation of his/her end-semester examination answer paper in a theory course within ten days from the publication of the results on payment of a prescribed fee through proper application to the Controller of Examinations forwarded through the Head of the Department. The Controller of Examination shall arrange for the revaluation and the results shall be published within one month.
11.2 Revaluation is applicable for theory courses only and not applicable for any other courses like laboratory courses, Skill Enhancement Courses, Internship, dissertation etc.,

12. Class Advisor

There shall be a class advisor for each class. The class advisor will be one among the (course-instructors) of the class. He / She shall be appointed by the HOD of the department concerned.
The responsibilities for the class advisor shall be:
  ☞ To act as the channel of communication between the HOD and the students of the respective class.
  ☞ To collect and maintain various statistical details of students.
  ☞ To monitor the academic performance of the students including attendance and to inform the HOD
  ☞ To attend to the students' welfare activities like awards, medals, scholarships and Industrial visits.

13. Break of Study

13.1 A student is permitted to go on break of study for a maximum period of one year as a single spell. Break of Study shall be granted only once for valid reasons for a maximum of one year during the entire period of study of the degree programme. However, in extraordinary situation the candidate may apply for additional break of study not exceeding another one year by paying prescribed fee for break of study.
13.2 If a candidate intends to temporarily discontinue the programme in the middle of the semester for valid reasons, and to rejoin the programme in subsequent year, permission may be granted based on the merits of the case provided he /she applies to the Registrar /Dean Academic in advance. Nonpayment of Exam Fees will also result in the discontinuation of the student.

13.3 The candidates permitted to rejoin the programme after break of study / prevention due to lack of attendance, shall be governed by the Curriculum and Regulations in force at the time of rejoining.
13.4 The authorized break of study would not be counted towards the duration specified for passing all the courses for the purpose of classification If any student is disallowed for want of required attendance, the period of prevention shall not be considered as authorized 'Break of Study'
13.5 Whatever be the reason and circumstance for the 'Break of Study' at no point can be exceed the maximum allowed period of a course. The Maximum allowed period for a three year course shall be five years (additional four semesters) only13.3 The candidates permitted to rejoin the programme after break of study / prevention due to lack of attendance, shall be governed by the Curriculum and Regulations in force at the time of rejoining.

14. Project Work / Dissertation and Internship

14.1 Project / dissertation work shall be carried out under the supervision of a faculty member in the concerned department / outside experts in .research centers or industries
14.2 The project/dissertation work will be allotted at the end of third semester or Phase - I in third semester and Phase - II in final semester
14.3 The Project Report prepared according to the approved guidelines and duly signed by the supervisor(s) shall be submitted to the Head of the Department.
14.4 The deadline for submission of final project/dissertation report is fifteen days from the last working day of the semester in which project is done.
14.5 If a candidate fails to submit the project/dissertation report on or before the specified deadline, he / she is deemed to have failed in the project work and shall submit the same in a subsequent semester.
14.6 The students may undergo Industrial training for a period (if specified in the Curriculum) during summer / winter vacation. In this case the training has to be undergone continuously for the entire period.
14.7 The students may undergo Internship at Research organization / University (after due approval from the Head of the department) for the period prescribed in the curriculum during summer / winter vacation, in lieu of Industrial training.

15. Discipline

15.1 Students should not indulge in any activity which will tend to affect the name and fame of the University. In case of any serious disciplinary action which leads to punishments/suspension / dismissal hall be dealt with disciplinary committee.
15.2 The Disciplinary Committee Members are appointed by University authority may impose one or more of the following punishments on the Students guilty of indiscipline. Written warning   ☞ Fine not exceeding Rs. 2000/-.
  ☞ Cancellation of scholarship, prize or medal awarded to student concerned.
  ☞ Debar him/her from appearing in University Exams
  ☞ Suspension not more than one year
  ☞ Expel from University.
  ☞ Any other action recommended by the committee
15.3 If a student indulges in malpractice in any of the End semester examination / Continuous Assessment Test he / she shall be liable for punitive action as prescribed by the COE office from time to time.

16. Revision of the Regulations

The University may from time to time revise, amend or change the Regulations through the approval of Board of Governors
